The Leading Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to a difficult academic quiz than a new pop project by a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Broken across four separate parts and voiced in thirteen tongues, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, often by way of the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the work of contemporary pop stars look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to blend historical sounds and the present, the ambitions are much higher here, with the balancing act far more pronounced. What really elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts in two, the listener still want to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down like cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the wild single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never exactly know—nor wish to predict—what you is going next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally different place than where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spirals upward. This trick gets echoed by another powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
