Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
