'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Ethan Galbraith continues contest with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he recalls the thrilling dying seconds of Swansea's epic comeback win against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. The encounter ended with Galbraith briefly donning a fan's glasses after the on-field celebration.

During the final moments of stoppage time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a powerful shot from distance, and the defender immediately slammed home the deflection before racing off toward the home end to mark the goal, with fans congregating around the players.

Extraordinary Turnaround

The victory completed an extraordinary turnaround given the Welsh side had been behind 2-0 during the latter period. During the delirium, there was some unintended consequences. He shared, "There was a supporter shouting out and Josh Key and I were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we spotted the glasses. It was a funny incident putting them on. We are on the pitch as players but we're individuals, too, so to have a laugh with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

That win earned a next round match at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a club Galbraith came close against at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. The athletic midfielder had arguably the best view when his former team took the lead in remarkable manner, with Jamie Donley's volley from about way out going in via the crossbar and the City goalkeeper. Many argued that it was recorded as an own goal.

"You would have wished they would've awarded it to him for taking the effort on from that far out," says Galbraith, who played in the middle before shifting to right defensive wing after they changed shape. That meant getting to grips with the England international, with whom he traded tops, and the attacker was among the City players who praised the way the underdogs attacked the game.

Guardiola's System

"Athletically they are exceptional but even the simple things and simple things, they can just do it over and over again," he explains. "It seems as if they always find their target and they are adept at manage and take the sting out of a game. You can think you're all right and then without warning they will just thread a ball between defenders without you even seeing. You have to be switched on at all times of the game. It takes a resilient mindset and attention just to keep pace."

Swansea Move

Swansea sought to acquire Galbraith in January and fought off rivals to sign him in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He became a favorite as a crowd pleaser across multiple campaigns at Orient and has quickly replicated that in Wales. At the London club he joined forces once more with his former manager, who four years ago gave Galbraith his first extended run in senior football on loan at Doncaster from United. Then came a spell at lower division Salford, before he permanently left Old Trafford.

Development Path

"I was likely a slightly green going into professional soccer. I think numerous professionals would say under-23s football is completely distinct. Sometimes it appears possession is exchanged without real physicality. You see few tackles or duels. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adjust fast."

National Team Success

He has shown that development for both domestically and internationally, shining for his national side, who remain in contention for the World Cup next summer via the knockout phase and for whom he has featured in the past five games, including both legs games against Germany. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's previous international manager, offered the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "little Iniesta or Xavi" given how he controls possession and his knack for a killer pass.

Humble Beginnings

It has been quite the ride for the kid from the Queens Park estate in the Belfast suburb, just outside the capital, who grew up watching his parent, his father, also a midfielder, play for his father's team.

Old Trafford Memory

His sole appearance for United came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a Europa League trip to Astana, where they played on an artificial pitch and the arena covering was closed owing to conditions of -15C. "That proved to be a extended travel and it was chilly," he recalls, grinning. "The preceding week, several youth players and I practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to travel with the first team and get a couple of minutes at the end was amazing."

Moving On

What was the challenge was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged his mid-teens? "The decision proved relatively straightforward, because I reached the point where I realized I wouldn't break through at the top level. I'm very appreciative for the time I spent there but it got to the point where I felt I needed to go my own route, move to a lower level and play first-team games. Now I'm steadily progressing again."

Welsh Adaptation

This occurs during the early part of the afternoon at Swansea's Fairwood training base but Galbraith has a commitment at late afternoon: a road rules assessment, another step towards getting on the road. Before his recent move to the local area, the 24-year-old was a frequent passenger in Swansea's so-called team minibus, a minibus driven by club employees, the transport team, which transports players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"My companions include a teammate, another squad member, an Ivorian player – the Swedish defender used to be in it but has started driving. It's pleasant to spend time with the guys but I'm hoping to be the following person to stop using the bus and behind the wheel. The Portuguese player likes to pull a few pranks; he's always up to all sorts."

Supporter Connections

While playing for his former club, Galbraith would blend in with fans on public transport after commuting at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
