Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
